How to use this guide
The whole process takes roughly 1–2 hours of setup the first time. After that, ordering takes about 10 minutes. Each step below includes what you need and what to watch out for.
1. Create your account
Start with Taobao — it has the best buyer protection and an international-friendly signup. The app and website support an English interface.
- Download the Taobao app or visit taobao.com and register with your email or phone number.
- For 1688.com, the same account works since both are owned by Alibaba. The site is Chinese-only, so keep a translation tool handy.
- Pinduoduo and Douyin Shop require Chinese phone numbers for full accounts. If you don't have one, most international buyers skip these two and use Taobao instead.
Pro tip
An Alipay account linked to your Taobao profile unlocks "Alipay Global" — an international payment option accepted in 200+ countries that works with non-Chinese cards.
2. Set up payment
You have three practical options, from easiest to most flexible:
- International card via Alipay Global — Visa / Mastercard / Amex work on most Taobao orders. Slight currency conversion fee (~1–2%).
- Payment agents — services like Superbuy or professional agents buy the item for you and charge a small fee (3–5%). Great for 1688 and Pinduoduo.
- UnionPay or local Chinese cards — only relevant if you have access to a Chinese bank account. Best rates, but rarely available to overseas buyers.
Never send money off-platform
If a seller asks you to pay via direct bank transfer, cryptocurrency or any private link — that's a scam. Always pay inside the platform so buyer protection applies.
3. Choose a freight forwarder
Most Chinese sellers won't ship overseas directly. A freight forwarder gives you a mainland China warehouse address; the seller ships there, and the forwarder sends your package to your country.
- Integrated agents (Superbuy, Wegobuy, CSSBuy) — most beginner-friendly; they handle purchasing, checking and shipping.
- Pure forwarders (Panli, CNstorm, or dedicated logistics companies) — you buy yourself, they just consolidate and ship. Cheaper fees, more control.
- Shipping modes — air (7–14 days, by weight), sea (30–45 days, by volume, only for big orders) and line-haul (15–25 days, sweet spot for filament).
Filament shipping tip
Filament is dense and heavy per kg. For 10+ spools, sea or line-haul freight can cut your shipping cost per spool by half or more.
4. Pick verified sellers
Not all shops are equal. Use this checklist before you hit "Buy":
- Sales volume — filter for "1000+" or higher sales on the listing; it's a strong signal.
- Store rating — look for 4.8★ or above on Taobao, and "gold supplier" or "verified" badges on 1688.
- Real photos — listings with actual product photos and reviews with photos beat stock renders.
- Brand stores — for filament, buy from the official brand store (e.g. Sunlu, eSUN, Bambu) when price allows; you get genuine product and warranty.
5. Place your order
Set the forwarder's warehouse address as the delivery address, pay inside the platform, and keep your order number. Sellers typically dispatch within 48 hours, most within 24.
- Confirm the item details — diameter (1.75mm vs 2.85mm), weight, color — before paying.
- Check the estimated dispatch time on the listing; "24h" is standard, "pre-order" can mean weeks.
- Keep screenshots of the listing and your order in case you need to dispute.
6. Track and receive
Once the seller marks the parcel "shipped", the forwarder's warehouse will receive and weigh it (usually 1–3 days). You then declare the items, pay the forwarder's international shipping fee, and track it with a code like 17TRACK.
- Customs: most countries allow filament duty-free under a value threshold (varies by country). Declare honestly — under-declaring risks seizure.
- If a package is missing or damaged, forwarders have their own claims process — keep photos of the damage when unboxing.
Total timeline for a first order
Setup (1–2 hrs) → seller dispatch (1–2 days) → domestic delivery to warehouse (2–3 days) → international shipping (7–25 days) → local delivery (2–5 days). Budget ~2–4 weeks door-to-door, and you'll often beat that.
