A quick reference for choosing the right FDM material for your project.
Temperature ranges are general guidelines from manufacturer datasheets; always verify on your specific spool's label.
PLA
PLA is the default starting point for FDM printing: easy to print, widely available, and offered in the widest range of colors and finishes. It is brittle and softens at relatively low temperatures, so keep it away from hot environments and load-bearing outdoor parts.
PETG
PETG balances strength, flexibility, and chemical resistance, making it the workhorse for functional prints. It is hygroscopic - store it dry and expect some stringing until your retraction settings are dialed in.
ABS
ABS handles heat and impact better than PLA and can be vapor-smoothed with acetone for a glossy finish. It warps easily and releases fumes while printing, so an enclosed printer and good ventilation are strongly recommended.
TPU
TPU is the flexible filament family, sold by Shore hardness - softer grades bend like rubber, harder grades feel semi-rigid. Print it slower than rigid materials and keep the filament path as short and constrained as possible for reliable feeding.
Nylon
Nylon is exceptionally tough and wear-resistant, ideal for moving mechanical parts. It absorbs moisture aggressively, so a filament dryer or dry box is effectively mandatory for consistent results.
